. hey, everyone. good morning, welcome to "early start." i'm john berman. >> i'm zoraida sambolin. it is 5:00 a.m. in the east. up first, the tangled web that has insnared two of the country's top military women and two women who are not their wives. this morning we are learning much more about jill kelley, the tampa socialite at the heart of the investigations involving general david petraeus and john allen. first there were threatening e-mails sent from petraeus' writer paula broodwell. >> then he resigned as cia director. now john allen, top adviser in afghanistan, is being investigated for flirtatious e-mails he exchanged with kelley over a two-year period. >> kelley is pleading for privacy now even though she finds herself in the middle of a real-life soap and a here. we are hearing her voice now for the first time in a 911 call to tampa police, that was last weekend, she called to complain about the people outside her house citing diplomatic protection, which she doesn't have. listen to this. >> you know i don't know if by any chance, um, because i'm on in their council gene
cost the oil giants a billion dollars. welcome to "early start," i'm john berman. >> and i'm zoraida sambolin. nice to have you with us. it's 5:00 a.m. in the east. >>> this is cnn breaking news. >> we begin this morning with breaking news. a new crisis in the middle east, israeli and palestinian militants exchanging deadly fire near the israel/gaza border. they say it's in retaliation for ongoing rocket attacks into southern israel. >> triggered by an air strike that killed the top hamas military commander. sayre -- sara sidner is following the story. >> reporter: you can see gaza behind me. there has been air strike after air strike after air strike. we ourselves witnessed three air strikes, major hit. we could see fire and then three plumes of smoke. since then we've been also seeing and hearing rockets coming over into southern israel. we now know there are three people who have died in israel in an apartment building very near, within a 7 kilometer radius of gaza in israel. we also know that at least seven people have been killed here in gaza and the air strikes are continuing.
. a senior official is telling cnn details about general john allen's relationship with a socialite at the center of both investigations. this is a web of characters and connections that is impacting the team in charge of america's security. it is also delaying when the world will know who will be the next leader of nato. general john allen was to have a confirmation hearing this thursday on his way to becoming the supreme allied commander. that, of course, is now on hold while allen denied doing anything wrong, he is under investigation for potentially inappropriate e-mails he sent to this woman, jill kelley, the tampa socialite triggered the petraeus investigation. we'll get to exactly how in just a moment. the defense department's inspector general is going through e-mails allen and kelley sent to each other. >> the primary thing is that, you know, she wants her privacy protected. and i think that she's going to probably come out at some point and make a statement. >> privacy, of course, for all players involved is just a pipe dream at this point. and just how are they connected?

in defense secretary leon panetta has asked that general john allen's nomination to be supreme commander put on hold. for patreaus, panetta asked whether any kags that his affair started when he was still in active duty. >> we obviously are going to watch this closely to determine just exactly you know when that took place. but i think right now my view is, let's see what the investigation turns up and what the congress, these committees are able to determine as to what exactly took place. >> so a friend of general patreaus says the affair starts two months after he took over as cia director and ended about four months ago. four days after the patreaus scandal broke, investigators are trying gather information. what we saw agents searching paula broadwell's home in charlotte, north carolina, the woman involved in the affair with patreaus. fbi spokeswoman would not say what they were actually looking for but you can see they're taking stuff out. seeing the agents carrying boxes and items out of her home last night. it's clear the scandal as it grows could have far-reaching implications. i wan

is implicated. the pentagon says general john allen apparently had inappropriate communication with the woman linked to the scandal. as fox's ainsley earhart reports, the fbi is busy with multiple investigations. >> reporter: fbi agents searching the home of paula broadwell, the woman whose affair with general david petraeus led to his resignation as the cia director. the agents went to her house in charlotte, north carolina on monday night. some of the general's former staff members and friends reportedly shocked that this woman was sending e-mails warning jill kelley to stay away from him. now, john allen is under investigation. defense secretary leon pan eight said he ordered an investigation of general allen on monday. the secretary who is a former cia director also talking about general petraeus' resignation. he says, quote, i think he took the right step and i think it is important when you are director of the cia with all the challenges that fess you in that position that personal integrity comes first and foremost. general petraeus was scheduled to testify about the benghazi attacks.

. obviously, the scandal involving the former cia director general david petraeus and general allen, john allen. secretary of defense leon panetta has jumped into all of this, ordering an ethics training for generals to be reviewed here. do you think, first of all, that that is the right way to go? do you think that's an adequate response at this time? you have been a general 30 years in the military. is this kind of review helpful? >> it is, suzanne. every time the military has a challenge that demonstrates a weakness in one of those elements that would -- that we would call foundational to the success of the military, you have to take what's called a stand-down or a review. you spend time focussing very narrowly and deeply on one particular vertical and in this case it's values. we not only have this issue with dave petraeus and toe poe teshlly john allen, but the defendant defense just demoted general kip ward from his four stars to three stars. we have a four star that acted with indiscretion apparently for some time at fort bragg. we have ae three star -- there are multiple examples

connell and john boehner. can you help explain that? >> mitch mcconnell who runs the senate republican caucus, he's definitely playing the role of the bad cop in that he does not want to compromise at all on tax cuts, has taken a much more hard-line approach, has the bulk of his time talking to "the wall street journal" editorial page, basically speaking to the base. where you have speaker boehner talking in much more conciliatory tones and talking about getting a deal. i think that's going to be the dynamic. mitch mcconnell is up for re-election in 2014. in a very conservative state where it's not inconceivable the tea party would run somebody against him if he does not take a hard-line approach. people need to remember that as these negotiations unfold. for boehner, he wants a deal. i do want to comment a second on the interview you had with paul ryan. ryan might not think that there is a mandate, but the president does, congressional democrats do, and the public does, if you look at polling. and there's zero chance that the president is going to compromise on this, which is why i think there's
there. >> hi, john. the response has been very warm. obviously the people we're seeing are people who want to come out and embrace the president's message. but he spoke here in this auditorium, at an historic site, to 1500 students and professionals. people who are pro-democracy, advocates, and regular citizens who just wanted to hear his message. he got a very warm reception here and the white house said that he was moved, as well, by the thousands of people who came out to greet him on the road outside the airport when he arrived. the airport gave an address in which he acknowledged that democracies are sometimes difficult and it's a struggle to get to full freedom. but he said that it is, of course, worth the effort. and he also made clear that it isn't just a visit of goodwill, it also has strategic significance with a message to another nation in the area. listen to this. i don't know if we have that sound. we don't have the sound. but he talked about-ish he said i have a message to north korea, as well. if north korea wants to make the same choice that myanmar made, and get rid

a dime more in taxes. i'm not going to do that." earlier, house speaker john boehner told reporters that allowing tax cuts for the wealthy to expire at the end of the year would be harmful to the economy. "the congressional budget office released a report that the most harmful consequences of the fiscal cliff come from increasing tax rates, and according to ernst and young, raising the top rates would destroy nearly 700,000 jobs in our country." the fiscal cliff is the result of the unresolved debt ceiling debate a year-and-a-half ago: $110 billion in spending cuts - half of it defense-related. it's also a list of tax breaks about to expire that includes: the bush tax cuts, the alternative minimum tax, reduced payroll tax, and the federal unemployment benefit extension. some believe that negotiations come so soon after the election that it may put pressure on republicans to compromise. . john and zoraida have the day off. it is 5:00 a.m. let's get started. up first, more fallout from the sudden and shocking resignation of cia director david petraeus, because of an extramarital affair. there are new details, and new questions this morning, about an fbi investigation that led to his departure. the fbi uncovered evidence of an affair between petraeus and his biographer paula broadwell, after she allegedly sent harassing e-mails to another woman she jealously thought was too close to petraeus. new york congressman peter king says there are far more questions than answers. >> this seems to have been going on for several months. yet now it appears that they're saying that the fbi didn't realize until election day that general petraeus was involved. it just doesn't add up. and you've got this type of investigation, the fbi investigating e-mails, the e-mails leading to the cia director, and it's taking four months to find out that the cia director was involved. >> cnn's barbara starr is following this developing story, she's live at the pentagon for us. good morning. tell
